About a week ago, I read a short story and saw some photos on a Facebook page called, "Our Old Town Eau Claire" and it interested me. It was about a semi-forgotten cemetery out in the country just outside of Eau Claire. According to Wikipedia there used to be a general store and post office in 1895, along with about 30 residents. Unfortunately, when the Great Depression hit, the small settlement rapidly declined and soon was a ghost town. All that is left is the Hadleyville Cemetery, established in 1859.
According to "Our Old Town Eau Claire", there was a young woman, about 21 years of age who was reportedly brutally murdered at a nearby farmhouse. Whether that house or farm is still there, it was not mentioned. The page mentions that she was interred in this cemetery and is seen walking throughout the headstones and in the general area.
I wonder if she is a "lady in white?" If she was murdered, was it ever solved? Does she know she was killed and is even dead? Did she know the person or persons who took her life? Are any of her family buried here? Perhaps the murder was never solved and that's why she cannot pass on to the other side. When I asked the admin of the Facebook page about how long ago it had happened, he thought it was about 100 years ago and a few others had also heard of this tale. Is it really a tale?
If you live in the area, go check it out! It's a very nice, well manicured cemetery in the Town of Pleasant Valley (Eau Claire area). It looks as though the Township has started cleaning up and refurbishing the headstones, which is nice.
First, I want to share this headstone. I have seen numerous quotes on headstones, but this by far is the most haunting and beautiful, and has such a great impression or outlook on death. Maybe it's because there are so many young children buried there~
Here are some other headstones in all their decayed beauty....
Below is the headstone of the "wife of Hadley"
